Tarot De Marseille

£45

When Alejandro Jodorowsky approached André Breton in the early 1950s, intending to gift him a Waite-Smith deck, he recalls Breton saying: “This is a ridiculous deck of cards. Its symbols are lamentably obvious. There is nothing profound in it. The sole valid Tarot is that of Marseille. Its cards are intriguing and moving, but they never surrender their intrinsic secret.”

The artwork found in these cards is the work of two artists – The Major Arcana and Ace cards are woodcut prints by Paul Devaux which first appeared in Le Tarot Egyptien – 1922. The Minor Arcana are by François Gassmann from a deck first produced in 1840 in Geneva, Switzerland. Artwork by Devaux has had colour added to it but is otherwise in it’s original state. Artwork by Gassmann has been altered slightly so that they work together as a whole. Creating, for the first time, a full deck of Tarot Cards which include Devaux’s striking and iconic woodcuts.

The cards are printed in the UK on thick 410gsm card stock, have a matt laminate finish and come in a stunning two-piece box depicting mirrored day-time and night-time scenes illuminated by the sun on the front and the moon on the back. Perfect for proud display on your mantle piece (or altar).
